History:

- It all started in 1998, when a few housewives decided to iniate welfare activities aimed at attending unattended poor patients in various hospitals of Lahore. This iniative took the form of ASK Social Service. Under this name the iniative expanded the scope of activities to include Medical Camps, Vaccination programmes, Distribution of Clothes and Food during the Holy Month of Ramazan amongst the Low income population of Badami Bagh Lahore.

Initially funding came from the members personal donations. As the scope of activities increased, a need was felt to generate more funds. This was done through Organization of Fund Raising Programmes, and collection and then selling of hides of sacrificed animals on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.

As more and more people joined this noble cause, it was finally decided to transform ASK Social Service into a formal Not for Profit Organization called Medicare Trust (Registration No. 6822) in 2000 under the Trusts Act 1882. A Board of Trustees headed by a Chairman and comprising of the major donors who are businessmen and professionals of repute in their respective areas was entrusted the task of looking after the affairs of the Trust.

A review of a study conducted by Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (SMEDA) of the slums in the Badami Bagh area of Lahore, as well the first hand experience of the trustees and members of the Trust revealed that this area is in dire need of proper medical care and especially maternity care of mothers and their newborn babies. This resulted in the initiation of Medicare Center and Maternity Home in the area.

Medicare Center and Maternity Home was completed in August 2005. Initially services were offered to Out Patients only. In October 2006, the services were extended to In Patients also. At the moment around 200 patients are being provided services daily from this facility. All of the patients are provided free and/or subsidized treatment, the cost of which is borne by the Trust through Donations, Zakat and Sadaqat.
